Why San Francisco
San Francisco and the Bay Area continue to dominate the U.S. startup and venture capital landscape. Through the first nine months of 2025, startups in the region raised a record $111.7 billion in venture funding, representing approximately 45% of all U.S. venture capital investment and surpassing the previous annual record set in 2021. San Francisco alone accounted for roughly $93.9 billion of that total, with sustained activity across early-stage, growth, and mega-rounds. This level of capital concentration significantly outpaces every other U.S. metro area and reinforces the Bay Area’s position as the country’s most powerful engine for startup financing.
The region is also the global epicenter for AI and frontier technology. In 2025, Bay Area startups raised approximately $122 billion in AI and DeepTech funding, capturing more than 75% of all U.S. AI venture investment, including OpenAI’s landmark $40 billion round closed in March 2025. Beyond capital, the ecosystem itself is unmatched, with over 18,000 active startups and 268 unicorns concentrated in a dense, highly connected network of founders, investors, corporates, and customers. For international startups seeking U.S. expansion, San Francisco offers direct access to the world’s largest technology market, deep sector expertise, and unparalleled opportunities to validate product-market fit, secure strategic partnerships, and scale globally.
